From Affirmative Action to Diversity

The real purpose of "diversity" is to let certain people pick & choose who to give positions & awards on some basis other than objective standards of merit. "Affirmative action" began as plans for rectifying past discrimination, by actively recruiting women & "minorities" for positions & student slots. It generally was presumed that absent unacceptable discrimination the workforce, student body, etc would have about the same proportions of minorities & women as the population at large. That presumption caused 'affirmative action' to quickly become group quotas, for which the term became a virtual synonym.

The passage of time since de jure discrimination existed makes the ostensible purpose of "affirmative action" less important and more likely to be viewed as completed & no longer necessary. That would put the Race Racket & the radical feminists almost out of business. Therefore, the discriminators came up with the magical theory of "diversity" that can't be objectively measured or held to any definable standard, but somehow is so transcendantly valuable we must allow bureaucrats & judges to discriminate on various non-merit grounds.

Similar verbal gymnastics have gradually turned "affirmative action" into "diversity" -- a word ambiguous enough to avoid the innate contradictions of a liberal society affirming illiberal racial preferencing.

In an increasingly multiracial society, it has grown hard to determine the racial ancestry of millions of minorities. Is someone who is ostensibly one-half Native...
