Tribe of Liberty

"I would (and often do) argue that the left has grown confused about all this. They've tried to turn government itself into tribal enterprise of some kind." As usual, Goldberg is concerned about the speck in the left's eye rather than the log in his own. For today's lesson he ignores all the right-wing rhetoric against diversity, multiculturalism, and tolerance. His tribe's goal is universality of tradition, belief, and purpose. The monoculture of the Muslim world or the Soviet world is their city on a hill and brotherhood of man. Goldberg may use words like "liberty" and "individualism" but I doubt he understands them much better than the Islamists.

Yeah, Stalin built some city on a hill didn't he? Oh, my mistake that was a gulag!

"Yeah, Stalin built some city on a hill didn't he?"

Exactly why your ideal city is no better. I guess you missed my implication.

The leaders of the UK, France and Germany all denounced multiculturalism as a failure. A nation must have one culture if it is to survive. A nation cannot exist when it is fragmented.

Ditto_A nation divided cannot stand. Where did we here that before?

They were describing a different sort of thing than what the "conservatives" here are after. Some of you folks are after something more like the cultural "cohesion" bin Laden was after. And that's why I can no longer vote Republican.

I could dispatch you and go for ice cream right after that, I hate you demons that much.

Your impotent boasting is laughable. But are you people united by hate? Yes, I don't doubt some of you are. And that is the loser's way to unite.

The left uses diversity, multi-culturalism and tolerance to keep Americans divided and to identify with their racial or ethnic group rather than identifying as Americans first. They want us to join their collective and to join into Group-think but not unite.

The progressives use diversity, multi-culturism etc to divide us, since they know they are not even close to anything more than a small percentage of the population. The progressives support Muslim conservatives because as someone much wiser than me said "The enemy of my (greater) enemy is my friend", much like the Russian Communists were happy to align with nationalists and other groups to overthrow the Czar in 1917. Once he was out, the Communists took control and slaughtered their (smaller) enemies. It's as clear as it can be.

Unite? Unite like the Islamic world? Like the Soviets were united? This is a collectivist mindset you endorse, comrade.

Sycophant. The "rhetoric" you prescribe to is not uttered by the right, but by the left in both politics and media. Your leaders know that if they shout it loudly enough, and often enough, their useful idiots will begin to cough up the same old bile they have been spoon feeding you for decades. Rave on, that men shall know you mad.

You are either ignorant or willfully blind to the right's hypocrisy on this issue.
We like tribalism for the same reason we like to eat fatty foods: We evolved that way.

Homo sapiens didn't survive long on the African savannas as rugged individualists. Alone, they couldn't scare away the scarier animals and, for the most part, they couldn't catch or kill the tastier ones. But in groups, humans rose to the top of the food chain thousands of years ago and have been passing down their tribe-loving genes ever since.

Customs and practices that ensured the survival of the species were worked out through trial and error and passed from one generation to another. Over...
