If you think of it as good vs. evil, then evil will usually win a vote. You know all the best campaign directors and their lawyers are in Hell or heading in that direction.

That is why the framers created a republic, because all pure democracies fail because of people are sinners and will sink to the lowest common denominator with no standards. And standards went out the window a long time ago. Just try answering the questions on a 1900 eigth grade test on any subject The average grad student today would fail misserably.
