10 Facts for Liberals: Why Gun Control Can't Stop Another Newtown Massacre

Yeah the NRA's proposal for armed guards is a bit disappointing. The most obvious and easily implemented step is to honor state-issued handgun carry permits in the schools. One secretary or janitor with a pistol might have brought the shooting to an end before 26 people died. Numerous would-be mass shootings have been stopped by private citizens with guns in the past. The worst death tolls have been in "gun-free" zones.

Doc, technically speaking, the NRA's call for police at the schools is better than arming a school employee; just because a person is issued a permit and a weapon does not mean they will be able to keep a cool head and react to the situation with deliberation. Although as a stop gap there should be some procedure as you suggest, these people have to be able to be mentally tough enough to take the assailant on without hesitation, and I think that secretaries, custodians and teachers are not always the people you want to depend on in a gun battle. It takes a special kind of determination to stop a violent criminal, and I just think the people you arm should be dedicated to that task and have the demonstrated ability to act appropriately.

I agree with you, whole heatedly VSFC, an armed and TRAINED presence is much more desirable IMHO.

There are now calls from the Left for gun control legislation in response to Adam Lanza's unconscionable mass killing of innocent children at Sandy Hook Elementary. However, very few people seem to be asking the most basic question of all before getting started: What gun control legislation could have stopped Adam Lanza?

The answer is "none."

Let's consider a few alternatives:

1) The school was already a "gun free zone;" so obviously that wasn't effective. Of course, the sort of people who would respect a "gun free zone" in the first place are the very ones you wouldn't have to worry...
