Well after Einstein formulated the basics for general relativity he was stymied for almost eight years because he didn't have the mathematics background to come up with the field equations. It wasn't until Marcel Grossman (educated at a state university) taught him the math of differential geometry and Reimann's metric tensor that he was able to complete the theory. Even then he was almost beaten to the punch by David Hilbert (also educated at a state run university.) General relativity had no practical application at the time. If Einstein had not come up with special relativity someone else would have sooner or later. General Relativity was a whole different ballgame though.
