What is all this garbage about "We don't leave men behind"? Last I heard, we were still in active combat with the Taliban. By this logic, we should have sent all the German POWs back to Germany in return for our POWs while WWII was still going on.

I explained to my employees why the stimulus wouldn't work by proposing that we send a check to all of our patients so they could buy more of our services and thus grow our business. I also suggested we pay a middle-man (the government) to manage this program and that they would take a percentage of each check we sent out. My employees rightly responded that not only would our practice not grow but we would probably go bankrupt.
He's quoting Arthur Brooks, which is clearly stated in the preceding paragraph. Maybe you should try reading the whole article and not just the second page. Then again, that might require more effort than levelling false accusations out of ignorance.

One of the things wrong with this is that it only leaves 20% to pay for salaries, overhead, advertising, and all the other expenses incurred by a major company such as legal fees, regulatory compliance and taxes. In other words, they wouldn't be making 20% profits, they would be making a very small percentage of that if they make any profit at all.
You are obviously under the misguided impression that companies are formed to provide jobs for people. They are not. They are formed to create revenue for the owner or shareholders and nothing else. You would think a struggling company that does what it can to cut supply costs, taxes, rent, utilities, etc was only being prudent but you think that trying to cut labor costs (Usually the largest budget item) is being cheap.

I don't know where you live but herbal healers, holistic medicine practitioners, etc. are a dime a dozen here in GA. I have had three patients ( I am a dentist, not a physician) go to get the native American "cure for cancer" and now only have their widowed husbands and motherless children as patients. All three died in less than a month following the cure and one didn't even make it home from the trip.

One good reason for taxing essentials is that all the illegal aliens who won't be getting the prebate will still be paying taxes.

pmarrone, your point is ridiculous. A "coordinated societal approach" means the government getting involved which also means most of the money will be lost to the bureaucracy before it ever gets any where near the problem. Take a look at the percentage of your contribution that goes to administration in government programs vs. good private charities. You should be appalled.

Warren, Actually, you were getting the handout when your employer was forced to match what you put in for social security. Also, the people who are receiving the payments now are the same ones who continued to elect the people who were spending their retirement money.
