Does anyone REALLY wonder? I have to ask, who believes deeply that there are moral imperatives (or, simply, black and white, right and wrongs)? America is being split by ambivalence (or neglect) over that one issue... all the rest is window dressing. Back in the '50s, Skousen wrote (paraphrasing) that "the destruction of America would occur [not if!] by denigrating morality, moral institutions "and" destroying America's educational system (perhaps so that no one could recognize the steps leading downward?). But not to argue "faith", simply to say that history shows us that countries in such social turmoil (not yet fighting in the streets, will come) are far more easily pushed into the abyss of dictatorial rule. It doesn't even matter what the 'intent' of the majority "is", but rather the level of disunity and the power of those hoping for "a fall." All it takes is a pen and phone... Why are Americans who visit Cuba so enamored with 'one' show hospital that they come back and portray Castro (then) as a saint? What kind of ignorance does that take? Or is is clearly a lack of moral discernment? Of course there are reasons for the separations occurring in the US. Many once valued but manual jobs are gone or distinctly of less importance. The skills that once meant 'blue collar' sustainability are seen as ghetto now and yet an aging NFL defensive end can command $8 million per year to perhaps tackle a QB 10 times in 2014's season? Where's the balance? CEOs making 350 to 1 over the average employee pay rate? Obviously this is pure envy and class worship "but" without morality it is all okay! Every man to himself... never mind 'women and children' first, the strongest, richest, most corrupt will survive at all cost. Is it any wonder? Why wouldn't some folks gravitate to the side that says "We need to fundamentally change..." EVEN when that change is not intended to help but to 'heap on' until full moral, education, fiscal and political destruction occurs. And when we are a banana republic and "Idi" (or someone like him) rules, those once ensconced at the top but now in a hovel will ask, "I wonder if Comrade Stalin knows about this... (substitute your own names, etc!)?" Fiddle on America! Fiddle on.

Correct. And "how" did she serve six years in our state? I have never comprehended her as even the AZ attorney general... American politics is like herding cats.

I greatly respect Thomas Sowell (and some others who offer considered intellectual approaches to our problems) but would have to say that we are fast approaching a point where intellect will not suffice. This nation is under attack from many sides and we will not be able to think or vote away the upcoming conflagration. The electorate does not understand (morally or intellectually) the issues and seems too preoccupied with their iPhones, pads and TV pastimes to care about their progeny. We are currently living under a Fascist style government. It is only a matter of time until, as all oppressive governments have done in the past, we see great force used against the citizenry to control and obliterate opposition. It will be too late then.
"Zero Escapes"... that is what Border Patrol has been "ordered" to report with every contact. No one escapes across 'in other words.' Shades of Vietnam's body count and by the same type of corrupt government administration. People forget that America paid $15 million dollars to Mexico at the end of the Mexican American war "for" Arizona, Nevada and California and that 'Hispanics' in those territories "voted" against Mexico and "for" inclusion with America. They've been trying to renege on that agreement this past 60 years. We have a Marxist regime in Washington and its tentacles have spread to big cities, Chicago, New York, Philly, DC (of course) , Los Angeles and Austin.... America is on the verge of 'no return.'
Obama? Do the Right thing? That's like asking a rattlesnake to take back its venom... AFTER it bit you! Not going to happen.... to him, all the bad is the right thing.
A well thought out and written article. Guns, like cars in the hands of drunk drivers, are inanimate objects. People, unraveled and either insane, evil or under the influence of 'something', are always the cause of pain and suffering. The Murrah building was blown up with fertilizer! How simple to obtain and prepare. Suppose some form of explosive was used for the murders we've seen? Would we ban all components of those tools? Certainly 'perception' is a root cause of the public's (some) hue and cry over firearms but the fact of the matter is America's law abiding gun owners do not commit these crimes and those law breakers (as noted, this psychopath broke many State and Federal gun laws already on the books) who do the crimes don't care.
