For example, if people who have given up seeking employment are added back in and if inflation were calculated as it was in the 1970s then the index would be around 33%. Discouraged workers seeking work were removed in 1994. This suggests we are 50% more miserable than we were at the peak of Jimmy Carter's ineptness.
