Once again, as in Iraq, we are seduced by the wrong mission - building a democratic nation. We cannot want the goal more than the local people - that just won't work. So what should have been the goal? Very simple, go in, kick the Taliban's butt, then get out. Our armed forces are VERY good at that. Trying to control an entire nation is another thing altogether.

But, you say, if we just left after blowing things up, they'd just regroup and take over again (same thing for Iraq, btw). So what, I answer, it's still cheaper and less lives to just go back in a couple of years and kick their butts again if they still don't behave. In fact, it's a lot easier, since they're no longer fighting a guerrilla war once they've resumed...

"Taliban Are Winning: U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Warns of Rising Casualties." Thus ran the startling headline on the front-page of The Wall Street Journal. The lead paragraph ran thus:

"The Taliban have gained the upper hand in Afghanistan, the top American commander there said, forcing the U.S. to change its strategy in the eight-year-old conflict by increasing the number of troops in heavily populated areas like the volatile southern city of Kandahar, the insurgency's spiritual home."
