I read an article in the past year (sorry, can't recall where) - a macro look at weight gain and food consumption - that claimed that the total weight gain in this country over the past 30 years could be completely accounted for by the total number of calories consumed. It's not hard to believe. Portions are MUCH larger than they used to be. Plus, you get used to eating larger quantities. I've long maintained that the success of any dieting plan is to train yourself to eat less - it's training like anything else.
