My solution to the problem of Obama's coming overpriced, underpowered, 55mpg put-put cars is to not buy one. Knowing that this automotive "Dark Ages" was on the horizon, I recently purchased a new, high output V-8 powered Ford Mustang GT (before they're legislated out of new car showrooms).
