Truly a bad example using the teacher analogy. If a teacher had to "make a profit", that is, educating those who he/she teaches, our schools would not be in the condition they are now. Profit our country by teaching our children math and science so that we can compete. China, India, Japan beat our best and brightest routinely. i quit teaching for one reason. It made absolutely no sense to me for two teachers, because of tenure, to be paid the same. Are the both excellent? Are they both lousy? Is one excellent and the other lousy? Yet they are paid the same. You sneer at profit. Maybe if the teacher had to show a "profit" we could get rid of the bad and replace them with quality teachers. Wait, we can't do that. TENURE

A culture to continue to exist must have a birth rate which will, in a worse case scenario, replace the parents. If every couple in the society has two children then we have zero growth. Right now we have a birth rate of 2.1 children per family. France and England birth rate is about 1.7 children per family. It doesn't take much thought to realize that as a culture we can't last. It seems that we overlook the obvious. Children are having children. Education is not important to the parents of these children because it was not important to them.
