In response to:

Why America is Still the Best Hope

Please, king10. I've commented here for a couple of years. Maybe more. Most of the commenters are from the right. Some of them are very insulting with anyone who isn't 100% far right. I've been called idiot, moron, Einstein (and not in the complimentary way, I promise), commie, etc. Rarely do I ever get anyone to address any point. Frequently they argue with straw men they've created - things I've never argued.. And, I'm not suggesting that lefties are less insulting or use straw men less. But, to suggest it's them and not your side - that's the problem. Partisans all work from the same playbook. I reject the tactics of the left and the right. They are the same, even if their ideologies are somewhat different.

anon, what is the point of presenting a position?

rightists will

or
dismiss
anything which they do not believe.

Good for you, if you truly believe what you say and argue your points from a position of clarity and reason. However, you are the exception rather than the rule when it comes to people on the left. And I agree with you, name-calling gets us nowhere. People MUST re-learn how to talk about sensitive subjects.

If the shoe does not fit, why do you insist on wearing it?
Does it break some unwritten rule for a columnist to bring his readers' attention to his own book? If so, I ask your indulgence.

But, after nearly a thousand columns and twelve years since my last book, I hope readers will forgive me for noting that today, April 24, 2012, HarperCollins is publishing the culmination of a lifetime of thinking and years of the most challenging writing of my life.

The book is "Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph." It is an argument on behalf of the moral superiority -- and universal applicability -- of American values.
