I enjoy Pat Buchanan, who is a happy warrior. But, he is mired in pessimism as are so many men I know of his generation, longing for a 1950s society which will never return. Girls are not going back to long skirts and men to t-shirts with cigarettes dangling from their lips. But, they all need to cheer up. I recommend Matt Ridley's The Rational Optimist, which is one of the most persuasive books on capitalism you will ever read, and Steven Pinker's The Better Angels . . . . Life is not only good, but it will probably continue to get better.

DHE,

it will continue to get better... for central banker and/or communists and islamists.... new mountains of printed cash, new palaces full of slaves, new suicide vests capable of killing more infidels - and probably new technologies to free dictators everywhere to give whatever they will to their followers... and mete out death and destruction to everyone else.

... for those of us who just live here - the prognosis is not so good.

Herman...

You got it right.

When survival is at stake, one may hear from a politician not what he believes -- but what he thinks the people deciding his fate wish to hear.

By that standard, what do the people of France, in the final weeks of their presidential election, wish to hear from their candidates?

President Nicolas Sarkozy seems to believe his countrymen are in a deeply nationalistic frame of mind.

Five million Muslims live in France, but he is cracking down on Islamists. He is demanding that the Schengen Agreement, under which Europe's nations maintain open borders, be renegotiated. If immigration...
