In response to:

Maybe Republicans Should Try Being Popular

Unfortunately I don't think any of the mass murderers or headline assassins like John Hinckley, etc. were recognized as psychotics before they committed their crime. What the Republicans need is a spokesperson who can make statements daily and produce some ink for the Republican position. This idea of presenting your views on Sunday morning news progams hits about 1% of the nerdy portion of the population, probably mostly Republicans.

The Georgia Tech guy was in active treatment so was the Sandy Hook guy. Hinckley was supposedly on the secret service watch list. The reality is that mass murderers are generally nuts and people know they are more than half a bubble off plumb but just don't say anything.

Republicans don't control the U.S. Senate and they don't have the presidency. Instead of wasting time and energy in doomed efforts to defeat President Obama's Cabinet nominees or sucking up to illegal aliens, why not focus on issues where Republicans can be off-the-charts popular while forcing Democrats into taking stupid positions?

After the slaughters at Virginia Tech, Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., and Newtown, Conn., every sentient person knows we need to do something about institutionalizing the mentally ill and -- at the very least -- keeping guns out of their hands.

That happens to be impossible right now....
