The only thing I would add is that the Social security system should over time change from pay-as-you-go to a true savings plan. The funds that go into it should be put in individually owned accounts that buy only US treasuries. After a certain age (65? 70?) the owner would be entitled to the annuitized value of his or her holdings. The one third going to individual accounts should be in the form of expanded Roth IRAs, which would allow us to eliminate 401ks. Everyone is entitled to the value of what he or she contributed, plus earnings, and nothing more. The later in life one retires, the higher the payout would be. The "safe" portion of the system would be...
