Actually, the biggest supporters for slavery were and still are black Muslims in eastern Africa. The modern institution of slavery was started in the horn of African by Swahili speaking black Muslims in the 12th century. Europeans and later Americans were comers to an institution where blacks sold fellow blacks as they still do today in Mauritania and other black Muslim countries.
