Also note: while the Irish immigrants already spoke English, most of the others (Italians, Poles, Germans, etc.) did not but they learned it and spoke it, even with accents. We never had to print everything in their languages, nor did we have to "punch one for English" as we now do for hispanics. And the European immigrants wanted to work, were better educated and brought up bilingual, disciplined children, not gang members.

A friend of mine, Republican consultant Matt Mackowiak, tweeted on Tuesday night that if immigration reform goes through Congress this year "it will almost solely be due to" Florida Senator Marco Rubio.
