Democrats Blocked Sex Offender Legislation For More Than a Year

Okay, why would Leahy stall this bill? There must be a decent reason - he's not PRO-Sex Offender. I was curious, which distinguishes me from TH writers and many Loyalists, so I researched this strange matter and found out why Leahy might want to delay giving more power to a Federal Agent that might limit civil liberties. Turns out that the panic mode for this law is based on an unverifiable number: 100,000. The media claim there are 100,000 unregistered sex offenders. Sounds like a lot and we should all panic and quickly give up more of our civil liberties, right? Well the number is more like 10,000 and there is no good reason why local justices can't issue subpoenas instead of Federal Marshalls. http://www.ovsom.texas.gov/

Maybe Leahy was waiting to verify the number and weigh it against our civil liberties?

As wmou points out what Sessions did was exactly what Big Govt Progs do ALL the time: they try to panic the public into giving the Feds more power and money.

I wonder who is next to go on the Federal Register?

Exactly, James.

First they get the power then they add names to the list a la the Terrorist Organization list that the WH has which includes Boy Scouts and the Amish I'm sure.

and so you think that Sen. Leahy is NOT a Big Govt Prog??? What is Leahy, a "real conservative" then?

web-master - of course Leahy is a Big Govt Progressive. I'm impressed that he remembered his civil rights roots at all (Dems used to be concerned with such trivial things).

Leahy is a "Big Gov Prog" as you say. Why the need to ask?

because DL is trying to pass him off as something else. Why hold up a bill that increases govt power if that's all BigGovtProgs are interested in?

Senate Democrats have been sitting on a bill for more than a year that helps law enforcement quickly track down violent sex offenders. In March of 2011, Republican Senator Jeff Sessions introduced the Finding Fugitive Sex Offenders Act in order to give the Marshals Service the tools it needed to track down sex offenders. Session's legislation had bipartisan support, 21 cosponsors and was tacked onto the bipartisan Child Protection Act. Yesterday, the legislation finally passed.

“I am pleased to see my proposal finally pass, and grateful to Senators Cornyn and Blumenthal for including it in the Child Protection Act....
