I teach at a high performing school in a wealthy suburb of San Diego where we consistently score in the top 10% of the state. We've been spending the last 6 months looking at the Common Core Standards and figuring out how to continue to adhere to our high standards. It is very distressing to see what has happened to public school in the last ten years. We are producing a generation of students who are good at taking tests, but terrible at critical thinking and problem solving. We are told Common Core addresses this problem, but I don't see how!

For decades, collectivist agitators in our schools have chipped away at academic excellence in the name of fairness, diversity and social justice. "Progressive" reformers denounced Western civilization requirements, the Founding Fathers and the Great Books as racist. They attacked traditional grammar classes as irrelevant in modern life. They deemed ability grouping of students (tracking) bad for self-esteem. They replaced time-tested rote techniques and standard algorithms with fuzzy math, inventive spelling and multicultural claptrap.
