First Solar did not complete it's Arizona plant because of a global glut of solar panels. They do not need the Mesa plant's capacity, so to claim they may not be able to make enough modules to supply their projects is to miss the point entirely. The warranty replacements were for cold climates (Germany) not hot climates. They increased their warranty reserves because all solar panels degrade faster in hot climates - in fact, chinese silicon panels degrade much faster than First Solar's. The projects were sold to energy companies not because of poor quality, but to fulfill the business plan. Finally, you mistake loan guarantes for outright loans. They are totally different. This is remarkably poor reporting!

Pretty poor con job here. In part 1 all that is presented is guilt by association. Goldman invested in First Solar and also gave to Obama. Wow! that's very incriminating. And First Solar's lead lobyist actually visited the white house and met with people! First Solar sold their utility power plants to energy companies, what a shock. Those companies contributed to Obama. I smell conspiracy. If you check, you will see Goldman and those other companies also contributed to McCain. They play both sides of the street so they win no matter who is elected.

Wow, I'm amazed how idealogy gets in the way of facts. Solar irradiance is roughly 1200 W/m2 at the earth. Your number of 55 W/m2 is the irradiance at Jupiter! But hey, that's ok, just missed it by a factor of 20! So your figure of 6000 sq miles becomes just 300, which could fit in any number of deserts.
It amazes me how uninformed the commenters on this forum are. Walmart and the Chinese do not own First Solar. Some founders of Walmart are also large shareholders in First Solar, but that does not in any way make Walmart an owner of First Solar. Loan guarantees are not a loan of money. The guarantees provide a backstop in case of project failure, which buy the way has never happened with any of First Solar's utility scale projects. The benefit of the guarantee is to lower the financing costs for the project. In every case to date, once the project is under construction the project is sold to a third party, and the loan guaranty is then no longer needed. The net result is no money ever spent by US government and jobs for US manufacturing.
