Conservatives define "fair" as the fairness of opportunity, unobstructed by favoratism, cronyism or executive fiat. Liberals (or are they calling themselves "progressives" again?) define fair as an equality of outcome, using whatever force necessary to do so. Never mind that this always results in bringing everyone down to the poverty level, except those in power of course.

Like most "atheists" you cherry pick the bible for verses to make an argument against belief, regardles of context, historical or otherwise. If truly an "atheist", then why bother? If your disbelief is your purpose, then be satisfied with propping your self up your own god. Instead, you're bent on disproving God's existence and hopefully disabusing others of their faith. It must be a very self-confidence reducing position to take if you're not satisfied with your own disbelief. AsI do for all doomed souls, I pray for yours also.

Great column Ben. It's really hard to imagine this current state of affiars, where you can't stand up for yourself, nobody wins or loses or where every syllable you utter is open to scrutiny. I didnn't raise my kids that way, societal "norms" or not. My son was actually suspended from school when he was 14 for defending a teacher against a violent classmate (by busting him in the mouth). The teacher was grateful, but I asked the principal if he should have just watched the teacher get assaulted and his only reply was the he had no choice becuase of a "no tolerance" policy. I told him that I would reward my son with a dinner out and a new pair of Jordans because his actions deserved positive reinforcment. Gelded age indeed...

I'm not sure you read entire column Simon. The point was to count your blessings when you're feeling sorry for yourself. In other words "get over yourself and look at the all the good", something you sorely need in your cynical life apparently.

I know that I would feel an incredible incentive to take on 4 years of college, 2 years of medical school and 2 years of internship to make $28.5k saving lives. Where do I sign up?
