"America has indeed been about ideas, but America is now and has always been about more, much more than abstract ideas." ??? In the analls of human political history, how much more abstract ideas can there be than "We the People" or "We hold these truths to be self evident"? America exactly is an abstract idea, that when put into practice with a moral God fearing attitude, leads to prosperity and opportunity never before seen. And if we think that only America is worthy of these ideas, then we make those ideas nothing more than the whims of man, and therefore little more than worthless.

To illustrate Pat's point in a different way, let me start with the traditional thought that each human being has a body and a soul. You cannot substitute one body for another (or one soul for another) and have the same person. In the same way, the U.S. has been a composite of ideas which are analogous to its soul ("We the People," etc.) and of historically concrete things which are analogous to its body (i.e., its territory, language, literature, history, etc.). If you try to export our soul into another body, the results will not be what you desire.

By 1980, however, the tide did indeed seem to be with the East.

America had suffered a decade of defeats. Southeast Asia had fallen. The ayatollah had seized power in Iran. Moscow had occupied Afghanistan. Cuban troops were in Ethiopia and Angola. Grenada and Nicaragua had fallen to the Soviet bloc. Eurocommunism was all the rage on the continent.

Just a decade later, the world turned upside-down.

The Berlin Wall fell. Eastern Europe was...
