Mike, great column. One slight correction. If the doe you shot was still carrying a fawn, you likely increased the fawn's chance of survival through the winter by forcing it into self sufficiency earlier rather than later. This data was in a wildlife magazine article about 30 years ago and I can't cite the specific reference but it's logical. Keep up the great work. A fellow Mississippi Stater Don in Raleigh

The Joy of Losing

Just like everything he writes, this is brilliant!
Lon, the insurance bureaucrats you say are making decisions now are, in fact, physicians. Another writer is correct in believing that we will see massive retirements in the medical community if the current plan in Congress is enacted. There is already a shortage of primary care physicians and general surgeons. The current legislation does next to nothing to increase the supply. With a decreasing supply brought on by retirements -- or those who leave the field in disgust to do something else -- and 30 million more patients trying to get access, everyone will have longer wait times or less access to primary care. If you think having the uninsured clog up community hospital emergency departments is a problem now, wait until they are...

Mike, I'm crushed at the thought of your not being able to bring the truth of what's happening on college campuses to a broader audience. I will have faith that higher courts will understand the jeopardy the lower court is creating for all Americans with their misguided ruling. I will make you case and UNC-W's lack of judgement an issue in my discussions with education leaders in our state. I can hardly wait for your return to this page.
