How they're clamping down on freedom of the press and speech in the UK (under a government that calls itself conservative but is actually centre-left): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2295067/David-Camerons-Winston-Churchill-moment-PM-boasts-defeated-foes-Press-tyranny-striking-historic-deal-tough-new-watchdog.html and in Australia (which has a socialist-green coalition government and an opposition that is centre-left; there is is no conservative party in Au): http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-03-02/media-inquiry-calls-for-single-watchdog/3865114 It's worldwide.
When even progressive left-wing publications such as the UK Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2002/aug/18/drugs.drugsandalcohol and Australia's ABC: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-05-24/high-risks-cannabis-and-psychosis/2729178 are publishing articles on the dangers of modern marijuana, a sensible person accepts it wouldn't be a good idea to legalise it.
And we also have a major newspaper columnist who is reviled by the left as a right wing extremist (name of Andrew Bolt, billed by his newspaper as 'Australia's most widely read conservative commentator') yet he's basically centre-left on many social issues. And our supposedly conservative former Prime Minister John Howard engineered a massive gun confiscation scheme in the 1990s following, you guessed it, a mass shooting by a nutcase they authorities had been well aware of for ages before he went on his rampage.
Absolutely! This is true worldwide - a gradual shifting left all across the political spectrum until today being centre-left is regarded as being conservative and the Socialists are able to cast traditional conservative values as extremist far-right wing. In Australia, we have a popular would-be leader of the federal conservative party who is exactly like Chris Christie (his name is Malcolm Turnbull). The socialist government keeps saying their could work so much better with the opposition if Turnbull were the leader. That's because he's a socialist in the wrong party.

I have a lounge suite that suits me, sweetie.
Thanks for joining the dots for me. I live among many of these developments on the Gold Coast, driving past their billboards every day, and regularly question why they don't just cut the price by whatever amount of discount they're offering. Now I know why - it devalues the land. Incidentally, a mere kilometre from my own home is a sign for one developer offering $10K in gift vouchers to land buyers. The 'incentives' are just getting silly.
"but it would be nice to get the idea that the establishment Republicans aren’t content to sit on the deck of the sinking Titanic, watching the ship go down while they ask people running by if they'd like to play a game of shuffleboard while they’re waiting." Indeed, the choice between the so-called Left and Right major parties in US, England and Australia is simply selecting the descent speed of the doomed aircraft or plunging elevator. The Right of the mid-20th century is now effectively just left of centre and anything right of centre, even by degrees, is villified as 'extremist'.
