If the Founding Fathers could have looked ahead, they might adopted the 12th Amendment from the start. They might have made Senators serve at the pleasure of their state legislatures (but not more than x (6?) years without reelection by the legislature). They might have look for ways to strengthen the states and given meaning to the 10th Amendment (, which today is mostly a dead letter and ignored by the powers in WashDC).

I am one of those who disagree with the 12th Amendment, as it greatly diluted State power and rights in Congress. After all, the People already had direct representatives in the House, which controlled the purse.
