Cops and firefighters are not irreplaceable, just as the air traffic controllers in the Reagan administration were not irreplaceable. They got too big for their britches and Reagan had the guts to fire them all. City administrators need to stand up to the public employee unions, and if that leads to an illegal strike, fire them. They work for the taxpayers, and most of the taxpayers are earning far less.
When it comes right down to it, there are many qualified young people who line up to train for those jobs and would not demand the big pension benefits. It's like Walmart -- liberals hate the company because they resist efforts to unionize, but whenever they open a new store, thousands of people line up for a few hundred jobs
