Now, if we could only repeal the 17th Ammendment so the States could have resentation at the Federal level, we could put a halt to damaging legislation forced upon the states.

A Losing Immigration Strategy

You say a two part approach, but it is a three part approach, and you missed the important one; we need to reform immigration law. If we made immigration easier, with things like guest worker permits for lower skilled workers, and revised H1 quotas and policies to attract high shilled workers, workers would not have to come here illegally. I guess there is a fourth and fifth reform too. We need entitlement and tax reform. We need to reward those immigrants who come here and work hard. Those that don't should have less incentive to stay.
Discussion of a morality is not a slippery slope, it is the essence of our problem, and needs to be discussed. You can take religion out of the discussion, but not morality. Moral relativism is what makes people believe that they have the right to do whatever they want without consequence. God gives us free will, but we have to live with the consequences of your choices. In the same way, our founding fathers, through the constitution gave us liberty, but it only works if we are made accountable, and have to live with the consequences of our choices. The majority of our debt problems come from entitlements, where true charity, love and caring for our fellow man has been replaced by redistributive theft.
But your argument wrongly assumes that government should provide the assistance. This diminishes, if not destroys, true charity which is given out of love, and accepted with humility and thankfulness. Entitlements from government produce an environment where the giver feel robbed, and the takers feel entitled. The only winners are the politicians who play emotions for power.
The reason the left digs to find a link to the Tea Party is because they are inherently collectivists. They view everyone as a group; the concept of the individual doesn't enter into their reasoning. The left has no comprehension of individual achievement, individual responsibility, or individual justice.
