We Need More Heroes

S.Ride was an exemplary person of great accomplishment. She was not a "hero." A hero is someone who sacrifices herself or endangers herself for others. The soldier who jumps on a grenade to save surrounding soldiers, or who takes the lead in taking out an enemy position. A police officer who risks his life to disarm a felon. A firefighter who rescues a person from a burning building. These are "heroes." God bless Sally Ride. She was a person that should be viewed with admiration and appreciation. But she was no hero.

David,

I have to disagree. Being an astronaut in the Space Shuttle program was an extremely risky job. I still remember being jolted awake on a cool February morning in 2003 when Columbia disintegrated high above my house. And I remember the sick feeling in my stomach as I watched Challenger blow up over Florida in 1986. Fourteen extraordinary people died in those two accidents, and there were a number of close calls for other astronauts that, for obvious reasons, were not much publicized.

Sally Ride and all of our other astronauts knew and accepted huge risks to advance our knowledge and elevate (literally and figuratively) our country. They are among the greatest of American heroes.

AGREE...and will add...Heroes such as these, come few and far between.

Dr. Sally Ride, an extraordinary woman, a legendary astronaut and a leadership pioneer died last week to little or no fanfare. I kept waiting for the front-page newspaper encomium that would outline her many accomplishments and the breadth of her influence. But that didn’t happen. And then it struck me: perhaps mainstream newspapers are hesitant to highlight the accomplishments of true, known heroes, for fear that the current corral of candidates, congressmen and political operatives who seem to hog the headlines these days look downright puny in comparison.

Sally Ride was a scholar, an astronaut and an entrepreneur....
