There is a LOT of prosperity in the area, largely an outgrowth of the new Government Motors and its hundreds of vendors and service providers. The fortunate suburbanites (fortunate to have been bailed out when they went bankrupt) have intentionally let Detroit go to the dogs, but who would want to live in Grosse Point if it had not been for Detroit's power? Consolidation will be painful, but it is necessary.

Yesterday, Dave Bing, NBA legend and very successful businessman announced he's not seeking a second term as mayor of Detroit. The Bing news is not necessarily shocking but points to what has become, in the eyes of many, a hopeless situation. The state has taken over the city and the guy combing the books says it looks dismal.
