Impervious to Evidence, Liberals Ride Again

I still remember the parents' orientation session when my son started Kindergarten at our Rich Suburban, Lilly-white public school district (1988). The principal wanted to reassure the parents whose kids had not gone to private pre-schools (my son had had 3 years of it by then). He assured them that by December of that year, there would be absolutely no difference in academic performance between the pre-schooled kids and those who stayed home with (presumably) Mommy. And so it goes. "Head-Start" provides free babysitting, lots of jobs for otherwise-unemployable teachers and child care workers, and makes liberal politicians feel like they are doing something nice for "disadvantaged" yoot. What more could anyone ask?

My children's religious pre-school (Masters Degree) director told us parents upfront that pre-school was not for academics, but for play, because that is how young children learn. She offered lots of field trips, fire department visits, petting zoo days, etc. The teachers read books, offered dress-up and imaginative play, music and instrumentation...but did not teach writing skills that would be difficult for elementary schools to change were those pre-school lessons different from formal instruction. Three days a week of half-day play was enough to stimulate the child's interest in the world around them...and to encourage them to look forward to "real" school.

Children do most certainly learn through play and these stupid no child left behind standards have all but removed play from the classroom. Gotta pass that standardized test don't ya know. No child left behind = no child gets ahead.
