Network tv shows were good until the early 90's when the major networks thought they had to compete with the cable shows, which were much raunchier then the shows on the major networks. The Middle is one of today's shows, though not in the top 10, that has neither sex or violence or profanity. However most of the tv shows are either mindless reality shows, though I do watch a couple of them, or shows that have manic characters talking about sex, shooting guns, and swearing a lot. I have to watch a Retro tv network to watch classic shows like Leave it to Beaver, Ozzie and Harriet, or Father Knows Best. As for 95% of today's shows, it's just plain junk and filth.

And they had to compete with premium pay television because the Emmys were being won by the premium pay television (and now Netflix) shows that are much raunchier. The Emmys are saying "raunch is quality".

If you stopped watching network television awhile ago because it had gotten so bad, you made the correct decision. It has continued to get worse. A few years ago, network television became dominated by cheaply made reality TV shows and talent contests, sitcoms with hyperactive manic characters, and socially liberal themes. Television has always pushed the edge when it comes to socially progressive themes. But at what point does it go too far? Perhaps when there are no other options left during prime time network TV.
