We have little tolerance since the only argument you can possibly make against gay marriage has been repeatedly refuted the courtrs, ie discrmination on the basis of moral discomfort and what you continually, and irrelevantly from the legal standpoint, call "tradition". I would like to believe that, with the exception of die-hard racists, most of America is not that limited in their rationale judgment. Though, I have sadly been exposed to the overtly religious crowd who can't separate church and state. I have the least tolerance for those people. Most of the country does, too, thankfully.
In this life, a number of relationships are of great significance, such as the relationship between a customer and his banker, a patient and his doctor, or even a congregant and his pastor. These are important relationships-some of which produce near-familial emotions, binding people together at a deep, deep level.

And while all of these relationships are important, they are but proximate compared with the ultimate earthly relationship—and that is marriage.
