I'm in favor of anyone's right to buy the LA Times, but the liberals opposing the sale to the Koch brothers are just a joke. Yes, the Koch brothers are libertarians, and in that respect there would be some significant changes at the paper, but on two of the most fundamental principles of liberalism it would be "same old/same old." The Koch brothers are in favor of "comprehensive immigration reform" and, at least in the case of David, homosexual marriage. Just call it Koch Brothers Derangement Syndrome, replacing Bush Derangement Syndrome, where all nuance is thrown out the window. To say nothing of the fact that if the Koch brothers ran the paper as a political tract it would quickly go out of business.

For what it's worth, I am just so tired of Linda Chavez. Does "passé" strike a chord? The problem with Jason Richwine is that what he said was true, but as one of the politically correct, Linda must kick and scream. Kathleen Parker, Steven Chapman, Linda Chavez...why, Town Hall, why?

New Age Conservatism and Other Doublespeak

Excellent column. I'm reminded of an early title by Pat Buchanan, Conservative Votes, Liberal Victories. We elect a reasonable number of so-called conservatives to Congress, but America keeps moving leftward. This column is a snapshot of what's happening today in that regard.
...the very question of the American identity. The author seems typical of mainstream conservatives who wish to explain these things in any terms but the obvious. But to note the obvious would, of course, be racist.
The author places demographics first in his list of structural problems, but either misses or omits the elephant in the room: the changing demographics of the American nation and the transformation of the white population into a projected minority by the year 2042. This isn't West Germany absorbing East Germany. Instead, it's a first-world nation absorbing a significant portion of a neighboring third-world nation, with the attendant problems of a poor, largely uneducated population. Californians are certainly aware of the greatly increased amounts spent on hospitals and schools over the past couple of decades, to say nothing of social services in general--it's basically bankrupted the state--but the issue goes well beyond economics, to...

The “NEED” For Immigration Reform

No "need" for "comprehensive immigration reform." All along, all that's been needed is enforcement of the laws already on the books, plus ending birthright citizenship. "Comprehensive immigration reform" maintains its status as code for amnesty, and nothing more.
If I recall, in 2008 Armstrong Williams was torn over whether to support the first-ever black nominee of a major party to run for President. He still seems to be engaged in justifying an indecision that would be unimaginable for anyone seriously conservative.

...bombing and the Brinks robbery, where some died and others went to prison for the rest of their lives. Not being directly involved in the Brinks robbery, Ayers and Dohrn got off lightly when they turned themselves in, yet all the same, incredibly, rose out of those ashes to semi-respectability (in spite of Dohrn's sick praise of the Manson gang's murder of Sharon Tate--think that's in the movie?). I'll just reiterate: at the time of the Brinks robbery the Weather Underground had become an embarrassment to the radical left. The moviemakers seem to have no idea of this.

>One of the film executives promoting the Weather Underground movie slavered: "This is an edge-of-your-seat thriller about real Americans who stood for their beliefs, thinking they were patriots and defending their country's ideals against their government."< What utter nonsense. The Weather Underground was a breakaway faction of SDS, and beginning with their "Days of Rage" protests were regarded as crazed by those SDS radicals who were shocked by the insanity of their actions. In other words, the Weatherpeople were crazed ultra-leftists. Intellectually, few of their comrades on the Left took them seriously, believing that their tactics were suicidal, and of course it all ended in ashes with the Eighth Street townhouse bombing and t

But he's retired. You can take heart--at least he was denied emeritus status. From Wikipedia: On September 23, 2010 William Ayers was unanimously denied emeritus status by the University of Illinois, after a speech by the university's board chair Christopher G. Kennedy (son of assassinated U.S. Senator Robert Kennedy), containing the quote "I intend to vote against conferring the honorific title of our university to a man whose body of work includes a book dedicated in part to the man who murdered my father, Robert F. Kennedy."[43]
