Yes, certainly Cronkite's assessment of the Tet Offensive of 1968 was incorrect from a military standpoint. It was a resounding defeat for the North Vietnamese. But his pronouncement that the war was unwinnable was dead-on accurate. Why? The war was unwinnable for the simple reason that there was never a plan to win it. How do you win a war without conquering the enemy? Conquering the enemy---as we did when we crushed Saddam Hussein's regime---would have required conquering Hanoi and taking control of North Vietnam. Such a plan was never even considered by Congress, the White House or the Pentagon. North Vietnam was always considered a soveriegn state and an all-out invasion of its territory was never planned.
