First of all, this was almost certainly a coordinated protest by unions to try to blame Republicans for layoffs and cutbacks in an attempt to substantiate Obama's claim of doom and gloom because of Republican intransigence. I doubt however, that any layoffs or furloughs are actually necessary and the union rank and file not only understand this, they know that their pain is Obama's gain. Secondly, even though it is a selfish practice, I can't help but believe that a significant number of Americans in the private sector are engaging in a whole lot of Schadenfreude, as public sector employees now find themselves in the same cost cutting boat as the rest of us.
