As we used to say in the 'Nam: "There it is." You know, armed "ordinary citizens" do not "serve the state."
Make that, "You know, ..."
“You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel.” As we used to say in the 'Nam: "There it is." You known, a gateway sin deftly promoted openly by Communists, Socialists, and the Democovet Party.

Once upon a time there was a Liberal and quite the money maker actor who mouthed the line: "Stupid is as stupid does."

I don't mind the "door slamming". What I hate is when they bolt it and put a padlock on it that requires either a lot of money, a lawyer, or a politician to pick at it. Sometimes all three. Seems both parties, but especially the Democovets now, have helicopter crypto-Fascists that delight in lowering the rescue ladder for some and pulling up the ladder for others. Redistribution -- for a price.

Perhaps not "turn back the clock" but rewind and set it so the alarm function can resume. Your are right, too many "cushions" allowing diversions into fantasy thinking, indulgence, and doing as a (subsidized) way of life. Too bad that when the alarm eventually goes off a lot of people are going to be really hurt; as so many pseudo Princes and Princesses are thrust into "real" (and physical) serfdom.
