The word is that he did it because he didn't want the Supreme Court to be accused of being judicial activists. The only way for him to nullify the media accusations that the Supreme Court is full of judicial activists is for Roberts to becomes a judicial activist. It looks like Roberts caved in to Obama's threats.
No one knew it at the time, but the key moment in the Supreme Court Obamacare case came on March 26, the first day of oral arguments, when few people were paying close attention.
