Note the context where this is written. These were Christians who thought Christ was returning "any day now" TM. They sold their land and possessions and lived together feasting waiting to be raptured out. It soon became apparent this wasn't going to happen. People had to go to work to buy more food. Those who just wanted to sit around and eat were admonished to get a job or they wouldn't be allowed to eat.

Three years ago, I put together a “Moocher Index” that measured the degree to which non-poor people in a state were benefiting from redistribution programs.

As you can see if you click on the nearby table, Vermont was the worst state, followed by Mississippi, Maine, New York, and Massachusetts.
