Actually, letting a few starve weeds out the most unproductive, and those can be replaced with new immigrants. With no ready supply of migrants nearby Australia should probably keep death losses to a minimum.
All those workers got all that money and drove up prices buying things. We all know business do much better when workers are only paid enough to keep from starving and the owners and stockholders take the rest. Giving the Great Unwashed money only leads to trouble for the upper class.

Internet Sales Tax is a Bad Idea

You have a central clearing house for internet taxes. State tax software already exist. Turbo Tax handles my federal income tax with a few clicks. Every shipping invoice has taxes paid to each taxing authority. The buyer can see every tax paid. Any dispute would be handled through the clearing house, individual business would not be responsible for mistakes and would receive a percent of the tax collected for their trouble.

How do small brick and mortar stores handle the complex tax regulations in their stores? How does a small internet business get their product to a customer 2000 miles away? Shipping companies have a presence in every state and deliver to every address, they deal with same taxes the brick and mortar store does and could just have a data base program that figures the taxes owed at the same time it figures the shipping cost. Easy peasy. People pay local taxes imposed by politicians THEY elected. If you don't like the taxes, change politicians.

Are Online Sales Taxes Only Fair?

The major shipping companies have a presence in all 50 states, that includes the USPS which has a presence in most zip codes. When a merchant uses the shippers software to figure the shipping charge, the tax owed on purchases from that address are added in, no extra data entry is needed.

Pack your own lunch, problem solved.
Guard towers, Minute Man volunteer with .50 Barret every mile. No one sneaks in.
If you look at corporate profits and the stock market you will see that the ideal situation is working perfectly, for them.
Local sales taxes are are either approved by the voters in a district or the elected officials of that district for the benefit of the local population. Taxes on internet sales are simply the taxes YOU voted for. If YOU voted against the tax, lobby harder next election against the tax. Isn't democracy grand?
For tens of thousands of humans existed as hunter-gathers then later as substance farmers. The wealth created by industrialization , fossil fuel usage and automation is concentrated in a relatively few hands.Keynesian economics can help a country by distributing some of the wealth to the common people. Making sure wealth distributing doesn't out strip wealth creation is difficult. Anytime money is being given out citizens lose incentive to work and immigrants flood in to take advantage of the windfall. Most people on Earth will always be poor, living as their ancestor have for millennia. Raising their standard of living would just impoverish everyone else.
In my state businesses are PAID to collect sales tax.
