What I don't understand is that to qualify for free meals at school your parents must be on food stamps. If we are giving people food stamps to feed their children then why are we giving them more freebies? The parents don't get extra money in food stamps over the summer when they have to feed the kids all their meals.
I did mean the opposite but I am a he not a she. :) The handle stands for Can't Wait to see Jesus.
Then you did read it wrong, annfan. I believe you make a choice to have sex or not. We all know from early on that sex is how babies are made. Just as if we choose to drink we know we should not drive. Once that choice has been made you must deal with the consequences. You may make it home driving drunk many times. Then one time you get in an accident and kill someone. You knew the risks before you did the deed and you cannot change that someone is now dead. In the same way, when you have sex, you could produce a child. You don't get another choice once whether you want to give birth to that child or not. You do have a choice after it is born to raise the child or give the child to another family.
You are correct, Frank, that is a very private decision. I don't know about being a right, though. Why doesn't the mother or father have a right to terminate the life after it is born? Is it not their child and their choice then too? The complaint this conservative has is that the taxpayers are paying for abortion and birth control. These are personal choices. Why doesn't our government get out of the bedroom and the doctor's office and let these things be truly private as you have said?
I am 100% pro choice. You can have sex or not have sex. Once that choice is made then you deal with the consequences of that choice whether it means a pregnancy or not. You may also choose to drink and drive. If you do, you face the consequences of being caught or being in an accident and maybe injuring or killing someone else. We all make choices every day. Good choices have good consequences and bad choices have bad consequences. I have a tree that could fall down and kill or injure my neighbor. Is it the responsibility of all tax payers to have free tree removal to protect the health of my neighbor? Especially when I didn't plant the tree myself, it was there when I bought the house.
If a conservative wants a better TV or car, he works more hours or gets another job to afford it. A liberal cries that the manufacturer is charging too much and they should get it for free. If a conservative doesn't like the way a business is run, he chooses to shop somewhere else. A liberal demands that they be unionized and offer benefits and pay that outweigh the usefulness of the workers.

different paperwork? If the government got out of the marriage business, then I could have my "marriage" in my church and gays could have their unions in their church or whatever. The rates of divorce and freedom of movement these days changes the way we do things and the laws and rules that were made many years ago. Thoughts?

then go ahead. This would seem to me to be true freedom. Health insurance and retirement benefits used to work because people stayed at a job for most of their lives. These days, people move from job to job very easily. If we all had our own insurance and retirement then we could pass those benefits on to whomever we choose. I suppose there would have to be regulations to state that this can only be passed on to one person or their children or something like that. It's complicated because of the "rights" that are put in place once you get married. Get rid of those automatic rights and then make everyone file paperwork for those rights. Another thing I don't know how it would work would be step parents and foster parents. Just need...

Why don't we leave the definition alone and just get the government out of marriage all together? Make every couple, be it hetero, homo, polygamist, etc. get legal papers giving the rights that they so choose to another. This way anyone, whether they are in a romantic relationship or not, can give rights that are afforded to married couples to anyone else they choose. From what I understand, this is already available in terms of Powers of Attorney. Is that correct? Get rid of all the tax laws regarding marriage. Everyone files their own tax returns based on their income. Let's get a simple tax code too so that this won't be a huge problem. Health insurance? Put whomever you want on it. If you want to pay for the insurance of your neighbor..
