Neil, your recommendation is not the greatest. A double-stack 45 like the Glock is heavy and has a grip that is going to be too big for a lot of womens' hands. They won't feel comfortable practicing with such a powerful weapon. On top of that, the 45 caliber, while certainly powerful enough to put down even the biggest bad guys, will go through a wall and into a person on the other side of that wall. Think of your kids being in that other room. There have been a number of forums about this on TH and many think that a 9mm, hi cap, with hollow points is better. Smaller grip, less kick, not likely to penetrate both layers of drywall, less expensive ammo and the gun is usually cheaper by a few hundred bucks. The Springfield XD holds 16.

most 9 mm rounds WILL penetrate both layers of drywall. unless you hit a stud.
but sometime, you may NEED to do that.
9 mm still has more stopping power than a .38 SPCL round, and you can get up to 17 in a magazine in some guns, and one in the pipe. For a Glock, you can get a 30 round mag that fits all the 9 mm guns.

A great point..I have small hands and my 1911 is just a little too large..got a Sig 229 in 40 S&W, fits like a glove, softer recoil too. Still love my PPK though. 3 mags for each and no, I will not be modifying them.

ISTR the PPK only takes 7 rounds, unless yours is chambered for .22LR or .32 auto.

Thank you, CVN. I have been wondering what type of gun I should buy.

cvn65, the operative word here is practice practice practice. the underpowered, overrated nine mil is such a piece of junk. if you can't shoot a high cap mag is still worthless.

Thanks for thinking of us realistically. Small hands DO have a tough time w/ the larger equipment.

get Glasers. They explode on impact and will not penetrate walls or doors.

don't bother with fancy fragmenting rounds. they're too expensive to practice with, and are stopped by some household items.
you want premium JHP ammo, like Speer Gold Dot, or Hydrashoks. you can be sure they'll feed in your particular gun.
So now we’re learning that Barack Obama wants to make the sale of high capacity magazines illegal. How nice. Nice --- and easy to expose as completely absurd.

Let’s just use one occurrence to address the dream shared by Dear Ruler and liberals of eliminating these high-capacity magazines in rifles and handguns.

To show the absurdity of this idea, let’s just go back to Loganville, Georgia 11 days ago. Melinda Herman was at home with her two children in this suburban neighborhood. Her husband was at work. Suddenly someone was ringing her doorbell. She was expecting nobody. The...
