Phil: Actually, it exposes how our government is doing evil. THAT is good in itself. The American people do not want an evil government and anything that allows us to know what the government is going in our names is good.

Phil: Because he stands up for the Constitution. Even when he disagrees with it, he still comes down on the side of the Constitution. That makes him a conservative -- without quotes. It is something you so-called "conservatives" don't understand. YOU are just as willing as Obama to jettison the Constitution if it doesn't suit your purposes.

Charles: I think the timing has more to do with the fact that the Senate is about to change hands than with Obama. Feinstein KNEW that if she didn't release the report now, the GOP would suppress it.

tmb: Killing people on the battlefield is NOT "cruel & unusual punishment". Torturing the OFF of the battlefield certainly is. As someone who served in the 80's I am AMAZED at how the military appears to have adopted the notion that in war, "anything goes".

Wess: After WWII, we hanged Japanese torturers for waterboarding US POWs. We also executed Germans for torturing people. We said that while war is an ugly business, there are things that are beyond the pale. Torture was one of those things. Sadly, that has changed. The US no longer has the moral high ground. On the question of torture, we are no longer different from the Germans, Japanese, North Koreans and North Vietnamese. We no longer have the moral right to complain when our people are tortured. Don't you see that that is a huge deal? The US was once (and still should be) an example for all mankind. We were a shining example of how government SHOULD behave. Not anymore. And this decision to use torture is just another example of how far we have fallen.

As we lawyers say, Asked and answered. Amendment VIII Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.
