Sorry—You're right that there’s always been non-procreative sex, and that child rearing has never been a legal requirement for marriage. However, the community has ALWAYS had a vested interest in protecting children, who are the future of that community, and has in various ways since ancient times promoted marriage as the best way of accomplishing this. You missed my point, which was that dismissing marriage as being primarily a venue for the bearing and rearing of children laid the groundwork for the current controversy over gay marriage.
