Why God Created the GOP

If I'm allowed to read oh one political commentator these days, I'd be hard pressed to choose between Pat Buchanan or Mark Steyn. Everyone else is living in a fantasyland.

Pat Buchanan, who famously said at the 1992 Democratic Convention, as he watched the delegates who represented the full spectrum of America---"This is NOT America!"

Same guy who said that the purpose of "Saturday Night Fever" was to denigrate Catholicism....

Buchannon is blind on immigration. He wants the Nation to continue to consist solely of white Europeans, he refuses to understand that we are a nation of immigrants, that each wave of immigrants becomes just as culturally American as the Founding Fathers on a generational timescale, and that our American Culture that they are becoming slowly evolves by absorbing what is best from what each new wave of immigration offers.

This ability of America to enrich itself with the diversity of our immigrants is among our greatest strtengths, we do it many times better than any other nation or culture the world has ever known.

Tell me where you see assimilation today. All there is today is Reconquista and demands to be fed cradle to grave. Success is vilified and attacked and resented.

gungy ... don't expect the left to see the obvious, or clear facts!

Flaming ... it wasn't the "diversity" of our immigrants, but our former immigration policy that selected the most skilled who could actually benefit the country! You fool leftists think saying the word "diversity" is an unrefutable argument for any insanely stupid idea you have!

Flaming -- in the past, immigrants assimilated. In large part this was because they came from similar cultures. It also helped that there were incentives to do so.

Now they are coming from completely dissimilar cultures and there are significant incentives for them not to assimilate. That is why the nation is becoming more balkanized by the day.

Immigrants are assimilating in precisely the same way that they have always assimilated -- on a timescale of generations. Their cultures were *always* dissimiliar. They *always* included many whose plan was to get rich and then retuirn home. Some of them *always* did, they aren't here now. Many more stayed, just like the majority of the present wave will.

The Jews, the Poles, the Italians, certainly all the orientals -- all can point to this or that Grandparent who never learned the language, who remained set in their ways. Their children & grandchildren are as American as you & I.

And, I suppose, there have *always* been people like yourselves apoplectically jumping up and down next to the melting pot while waving your stopwatches in frustration and making dire predictions about the country going to hell in a handbasket because of all these inferior new arrivals.
FlamingLiberalMultiCulturalist Wrote: Dec 21, 2012 12:41 PM
And you all expect these new American's to turn out to be carbon copies of the existing ones. You don't understand that as they and their children assimilate into our culture, our own culture likewise slightly changes with their contributions.

Or perhaps you hate and fear that tiny change. If so you are fools, because here in America we are unsurpassed in absorbing the best of what we bring in and making it own ouwn. For instance we see Anime in our popular culture and our art these days, from Japan, because it is a new, good, vibrant, powerful Art. OTOH we don't do foot-binding, footbinding is stupid and we reject it.

Your fear of some imagined 'dissolution' or 'pullution' or destruction of American Culture is even sillier when you consider which culture ir is that continually bursts over it's borders like Kudzu on steroids and takes root all over the Globe, that all the young people want to adopt and emulate, and that makes all the Ayatollahs jump up & down waving their scimitars and screaming "Jihad!!"

OUR CULTURE!!

If any one culture ever takes over the whole world, the likelihood is that it will be America's.

You're an idiot, flaming, if you think it's going to play out the same as it did with the old immigration policies!
FlamingLiberalMultiCulturalist Wrote: Dec 21, 2012 1:41 PM
We had pretty much an open door until the early 20th century, these days we have all kinds of restrictive quotas and processes. It's the modern system that concerns itself with strict quotas by country/region/occupation. I think that maybe it is too restrictive for the people it does serve, but it's useless for low-skilled labor on short notice, which is why it is ignored.

Flaming, until the 1960's, the immigrants were overwhelmingly from Europe --- mostly from northern Europe. Now they are overwhelmingly from the 3rd world. Our culture has always had more in common with Norway or some other European nation than Zimbabwe.
"God put the Republican Party on earth to cut taxes. If they don't do that, they have no useful function."

Columnist Robert Novak was speaking of the party that embraced the revolution of Ronald Reagan, who had hung a portrait of Calvin Coolidge in his Cabinet Room and set about cutting income tax rates to 28 percent.

But, to be historically precise, the GOP was not put here to cut taxes. From infancy in the 1850s, its mission was to halt the spread of slavery. From 1865 to 1929, it was the party of high tariffs. Mission: Build the nation...
