Hired a Union guy to help me install bed headboards for a Hotel renovation. Easy work. Got it down to a system because all the rooms were exactly the same. We were flying through them. He turns to me and says, "We're working ourselves out of a job." The Union mindset at work.

American Sterilizer (AMSCO) used to be a premier supplier of SS hospital equipment. Now a mere shadow of its former self. Why? Three guesses. Not because of inferiority of product, it was arguably the best! "Slow down, we'll work ourselves out of overtime!!" Well, they did! Worked themselves out of regular time, too! AMSCO still exists, and produces superior products! But, a fraction of its former size and former census on the payroll. It seems a shame.

If you were working under his supervision instead of as his boss he would have ordered you to slow down instead of hinting at it.

Many people think of labor unions as organizations to benefit workers, and think of employers who are opposed to unions as just people who don't want to pay their employees more money. But some employers have made it a point to pay their...
