There's some truth to what Cheney is saying here but he's obviously ignoring the larger mistake here and that was putting John McCain, a moderate Republican, at best, at the top of the GOP ticket. In that context, ANYONE would have been a mistake for the VP slot.

Exactly. Cheney's argument would only be worth consideration if Palin pushed more votes away then she pulled in. I don't think anyone has claimed Palin reduced McCain's numbers and that there was possibly someone else who could have brought in more. The fact is, the GOP machine nominated a fossil in McCain that had zero inspiration. Palin put perfume on a zombie of a candiate.
