Apart from the civilizational clash that Islam represents to the West, any talk of "winning" in Afghanistan is absurd and any discussion of the idea that does not address that reality honestly and forthrightly is an exercise in futlilty that will only cost us more lives and expenditures.

I believe his exact phrase was "the systematic hunting down of all settled convictions".

I have been observing the Left since the late Sixties and recognize that the only thing the Left is consistent on is "attacking all settled convictions", to use George Will's term.

Their behavior can be predicted accurately based on that simple criteria. It is the spirit motivating them and has been from the beginning.
