A few people will have work repairing the damage Sandy caused but that money will come from other people who will not have that money to spend on things they need or want or wanted to invest. It will now go to something that wasn't planned for and will be a net drain on the economy. Anyone who says otherwise simply doesn't understand basic economics.

"We didn't leave because we were afraid of looting." Like New Orleans after Katrina, those that lost everything might decide to move

This is exactly WHY stimulus bills don't work. Spending doesn't matter, producing things matters.

As Milton Friedman said, if you want full employment pay half the unemployed to dig holes and the other half to fill them up.

When you give someone 500 dollars a week and they stop working, the economy just lost 750 or 1000 dollars a week in productivity. No one will pay you 500 dollars a week unless you can produce more than 500 dollars a week of productive work for them

Basic Economics isn't taught anymore.

Far too many people in this world do not understand Bastiat's 'Broken window' explanation. They think ANY commerce to replace the windows is good, where in reality, it reduces the net amount available for actual investment. As you said, basic economics, but then Bastiat, Hayek, Friedman are not part of their worldview.

Heh, I've had one community college level micro and one macro economics class. I thought it was hilarious when the instructor told me in front of the class that he was removing my score from the curve on his tests because I messed it up for all the rest. I don't understand why, I'm not that smart. But it was sure funny how they looked at me. Maybe they were just stupid.

Hmm. I got told essentially the same thing at the one union job I had. I had an on the job injury and after returning to work from time off for surgery and even taking it easy (doing nothing half the day) I still got more done than all but one of my "shop-mates" according to one of the clerks who's job it was to keep track of such stuff. I thought that was funny because he and I really didn't get along well, he being a true liberal and me very conservative.

Can't hurt anyone's feelings, now can we? You have a stronger stomach than I.

They were probably not stupid, but ignorant, lazy, and lacking study and writing skills. Might as well be stupid.

On Tuesday voters in California went the wrong way on three propositions.

  1. Voters approved Proposition 30 "temporarily" increasing the state sales tax and income tax on individuals making over $250,000.
  2. They voted against Proposition 31 that would allow the governor to cut the budget in fiscal emergencies.
  3. They voted against Proposition 32 would...
