Take the state job but start putting as much aside as you can into diversified assets that will grow with or ahead of inflation that is bound to come sooner or later if they keep printing money. Afghanistan is a dangerous place and you may not survive to spend any of that $200K. And if you do, then you come home and look for work while you work your way through the remainder of your reward and pretty soon you wonder why you wasted that year and what the heck you are going to do now.

Also, state benefits and retirement plans being what they are today (and assuming no one will ever rectify them to bring them in line with private sector plans), you would be setting yourself up for a very stable future. If you are young enough to grow into the job, it won't be long before you're making that six-figure salary anyway.

I doubt that will remain. I have a fairly nice retirement from the city I worked for and I'll also have a small amount from the fed job I held along with SS but the city is on the verge of bankruptcy and keeps giving welfare to illegal aliens instead of protecting it's citizens and legal residents. Some of the local talk show hosts refer to him as "Villian-Raigosa" instead of his name, "Villaraigosa". Yes it's LA. Very close to the end.

I got married in May, and my wife brought student loan debt into the marriage. I had some savings before the wedding, and I could pay this off immediately without putting us in a bind. But is this “her” debt, or should I look at it as “our” debt?
